I’m working on my sermon for this Sunday, reading over Mark 8:21-28. It is a section full of memorable and popular phrases, like Get behind me, Satan, and, For those who want to save their life will lose it . . . These continue to find their way into our speech and context. There is one other saying here that, though quoted frequently, seems to always stand out, If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For the preacher, it is a pre-packaged three-point sermon–Deny, Take, Follow. For the hearer and reader, it is a startling wake-up call.
As we continue to see in Lent, the feet of Jesus lead to a cross. What are the crosses we are to bear as we follow in our time?
